Sewing Machine Tips and
Helpful Hints Tip #7.
Because
we sell quality sewing machines we are frequently asked questions about thread,
needles and of course, fabric. We thought it would be of benefit to share some
tips with everyone, regardless of the brand of sewing machine you are using.
Our
subject this time concerns another ‘special machine needle’. There are several
factors that determine which machine needle is best to use when quilting. A ‘quilting needle’ is best
for both piecing and quilting. The slim acute point and tapered tip are what
make this needle perfect for piercing tightly woven quilting fabrics without
causing damage. They are especially good for piecing batik fabrics. Try the
size 75 for quilt piecing.
I
prefer to use a quilting size 90 needle for actual quilting. The shape of the
back of the needle allows for great penetration of batting and helps the needle pick up
the bobbin thread more consistently. If you have had skipped stitches when
quilting, the problem is most likely your needle not your machine!
